Can a video doorbell tell you if your door is locked?

No. A video doorbell - Ring, Nest or any other brand - points a camera at your doorstep. It can show you the door, visitors and parcels, but a bolt inside the door edge and a thumb-turn on the inside face are simply not in view, and even a perfect image of a closed door cannot reveal whether it is locked. Doorbell cameras are the right tool for seeing who is there. Knowing the lock state needs a sensor on the lock itself.

Locksure monitors your lock - it shows locked or unlocked. It does not lock or unlock the door.

Shop Locksure - from £44.99
Locksure adds the missing signal: a small UK-made monitor beside your existing lock that tells your phone locked, unlocked, open or closed - the answer to the question you actually have when you check the doorbell feed at night. From £44.99, no subscription for core alerts, and it runs alongside any doorbell brand.

Common questions

Can I check on camera whether I locked the door?

Not reliably. Most UK locks show no external difference between locked and unlocked, and the mechanism is inside the door - a camera image cannot confirm the bolt is thrown.

Do any doorbells integrate lock status?

Some ecosystems show a paired smart lock's state next to the doorbell feed (for example Works with Ring locks in the Ring app). The status comes from the lock device, not the camera.

What is the simplest way to add lock-state alerts without changing my lock?

A monitor-only sensor such as Locksure: it fits beside the existing thumb-turn or key cylinder, needs no lock replacement or motor, and a standard battery lasts about two years.
