Can SmartThings tell you if your door is locked?
Only if a device in your SmartThings setup actually knows the lock state. SmartThings multipurpose and contact sensors report open/closed (plus tilt, vibration and temperature) - none of that reveals whether the bolt is thrown, and SmartThings community threads on "is my manual lock actually locked?" reach exactly that conclusion. Pair a compatible smart lock and SmartThings will show and automate lock state properly. SmartThings itself is a strong platform; the gap is simply that no stock sensor watches the lock on an ordinary door.

Common questions
Why doesn't my SmartThings door sensor show locked or unlocked?
It is a magnetic contact sensor: it senses whether the door is open or closed. Lock state requires a device that reads the lock mechanism itself.
What can add lock state to SmartThings?
A compatible smart lock (Yale, Aqara and others via Matter or native integrations), or a monitor-only device like the Locksure Matter version, which reports the state of a manual thumb-turn or key-turn lock over Thread.
Will lock state work in SmartThings routines?
Yes - once a lock-state device is paired, its locked/unlocked condition can trigger notifications and automations like any other SmartThings device state.
