Fitting the Open/Close magnet
Locked and closed are two different questions. The Locksure Matter sensor answers the first. The Open/Close Magnet lets the same sensor answer the second: a small magnet on the door frame that the sensor detects when the door is shut. There is no battery in it, no radio and nothing to pair.
Where it goes
- Close the door and clean the patch of frame beside the sensor with the wipe. Let it dry.
- Peel the backing from the magnet’s adhesive pad.
- Hold the magnet against the frame below the sensor and slide it slowly upwards until the sensor’s green light flashes: that is the point where the sensor sees the magnet.
- Move it up one more millimetre and press it to the frame.
- Open and close the door a few times to check it reports. The sensor starts reporting open and closed the first time it detects the door closing. The adhesive lets you reposition it during the first few operations if needed.
What you will see
In Apple Home and Google Home a second tile appears next to your lock tile: a Contact Sensor showing Open or Closed. Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant show the same thing in their own way. You can now trigger routines from it, such as a hall light when the door opens. Routines are set up in your home app, not in the sensor.
On a key turn door, fit the magnet opposite the inside sensor. The outside sensor does not use it.
Recessed frames
If the frame sits well back from the sensor face when the door is closed, the green light may never flash as you slide the magnet. Two fixes: put a small spacer behind the magnet to bring it forward, or reposition the sensor body. If you are unsure, email [email protected] a photo of the closed door edge and frame and we will suggest a placement.
Things to know
- Lock monitoring works without the magnet. It is optional.
- The magnet needs a Locksure Matter Thumb Turn or Key Turn sensor. On its own it does nothing, and it is not used by the Original range monitors.
- If the door shows Open when it is closed, the gap is too big or the magnet is off to one side. See Wrong state shown.
