Range, and where to put the hub

Original range: Bluetooth from monitor to hub

The monitor sends each lock turn to the Display Hub over Bluetooth Low Energy. Reliable range is about 5 to 7 metres in open air. Every wall, floor, radiator or large mirror in between takes some of that away. A metal door with the hub on the far side is the worst case.

Where to plug it in

  • In the hall, on the same floor as the door, with line of sight to the door if you can.
  • Not behind a TV, inside a cupboard, or next to the router or a microwave.
  • Where it also has a usable Wi-Fi signal. A weak Wi-Fi link makes the hub spend its time retrying the network and it then misses monitors.

Two doors on one hub

Fine when the doors are close: a front door and a hall cupboard, or double patio doors. If the back door is at the other end of the house, buy a second Starter Pack so that door has its own hub. We recommend a maximum of two doors per hub unless they are near each other. See More than one door.

Why a hub that is barely in range costs battery

When the hub does not acknowledge a message, the monitor retries at higher power, and steps back down once messages are getting through again. A monitor that spends its life shouting at a distant hub uses its battery faster than one that is heard first time. Good placement is the cheapest battery saver there is.

Matter range: Thread from sensor to your smart home hub

Thread is a mesh. Each mains-powered Thread device in your home (a HomePod mini, a Nest Hub, a Thread-capable Echo, and many Matter plugs and bulbs) extends it. The sensor talks to whichever one is nearest. So range is about your home’s Thread coverage, not about any one box.

  • One hub covers a typical flat or a small house. For a large house, a second Thread hub on another floor (another HomePod mini, say) extends the mesh.
  • A Thread plug or bulb near the door is a cheap extender.
  • The Locksure Matter Hub does not extend Thread; it is a display and account device only.

Testing range

Put the hub (or, for Matter, your phone with the home app) next to the door and turn the lock. If it updates there and not from its normal spot, range is the problem. Move the hub halfway and test again. Ten minutes of this saves a support email.

Still unsure? Email [email protected] with a rough sketch of the rooms and where the hub and door are.
