Fitting the Thumb Turn monitor (Original range)

Allow about ten minutes. You need nothing but what is in the box: the monitor, the Display Hub and its USB cable, the spacers and brackets, the thumb magnet, the cleaning wipe and the settings tool. Before you start, make sure your lock passed the four fit checks.

Each step below has a short silent video. Watch the clip, then do the step.

1. Plug in the Display Hub

Buying another? Thumb Turn Starter Pack £89.99

Plugging in the Display Hub near the door.

Peel the yellow backing from the back of the hub and stick the hub onto a suitable USB plug (any USB power socket or phone charger that gives 5 V at 1 A), then plug in the supplied cable. Put it within about 5 to 7 metres of the door, with as few walls in between as possible. You will add the door on the hub and join it to Wi-Fi from the app at the end; see Hub setup and Wi-Fi.

2. How Locksure fits together

The monitor sits on the lock plate below the cylinder; the magnet sits on the thumb turn rod.

The monitor body sticks to the flat lock plate directly below the cylinder, with the cut-out hugging the barrel. A small magnet fits on the thumb turn rod. When you turn the thumb turn, the magnet passes the sensors inside the monitor and the monitor reports locked or unlocked.

3. Test the spacers

Trying the spacers against the barrel.

Hold the monitor against the plate with the barrel in the cut-out. Add spacers behind the monitor until about 1 mm of the barrel is exposed in front of the monitor face. The spacers and brackets cover a barrel that stands proud by up to about 6 mm. Try before you peel any backing tape.

4. Clean the lock plate

Wiping the plate below the cylinder.

Wipe the plate with the supplied wipe and let it dry. Adhesive only grips a clean, dry, grease-free surface, and this is the step people skip when the monitor later falls off.

5. Fit the spacers

Sticking the spacer(s) to the plate first.

If step 3 showed you need spacers, peel their backing and press them onto the plate, centred under the barrel. Press firmly for 20 seconds.

6. Insert the battery

Sliding the CR2032 into the side of the monitor.

Push the thick end of the wooden tool into the hole on the side of the monitor, straight in, until the battery case opens on the other side. Fit the CR2032 with the + symbol facing outwards, then close the case. Use a Panasonic or Varta cell; see Battery life and how to change it.

7. Fit the monitor

Peeling the backing and pressing the monitor onto the plate.

Peel the backing tape. Note the U shape at the back of the monitor and the U at the bottom of the exposed barrel: bring the monitor to the plate so the two U shapes fit together, and you should feel them locate. Then press the monitor onto the plate (or onto the spacers) for 20 seconds. The adhesive reaches full strength after about 24 hours, so avoid knocking it today.

8. Move the thumb turn to the install position

Turning the thumb turn to the position shown before fitting the magnet.

Turn the thumb turn as far as it will go anti-clockwise, then turn it back clockwise to the first vertical position. Leave it there while you fit the magnet. The magnet’s position relative to the monitor is what the sensors read, so this step sets the reference.

9. Clean the thumb turn rod

Wiping the rod between the barrel and the thumb turn head.

Wipe the rod with the supplied wipe so the magnet’s adhesive grips.

10. Fit the thumb magnet

Seating the small magnet on the rod, facing the monitor.

Peel the backing tape from the magnet and pick it up with the rectangular tool from the box. Seat it on the thumb turn rod, in the gap between the barrel and the thumb turn head, aligned to the far edge of the rod exactly as the clip shows, and press for 20 seconds before removing the tool. It must not rub on the plate as the thumb turn rotates.

11. Test it

Locking and unlocking while watching the lights.

Lock the door and watch the monitor: it flashes cyan. Unlock it: it flashes amber. Once the door has been added to the hub (step 13), the hub shows the door and follows each turn. If the lights do not flash, or flash the wrong colour, see What the lights mean and Not detecting a lock or unlock.

12. Change the setting (optional)

Using the settings tool on the pin at the side of the monitor.

Locks differ in which way they turn to lock, and in which side of the door the monitor sits. The settings pin on the side of the monitor sets both, and the clip shows the tool in use. A short press with the settings tool moves the monitor to its next fitting setting (there are four); the monitor saves it and restarts itself. Then lock and unlock the door and check the hub or app shows locked (cyan) when the door is locked. If it still reports the wrong way round, press once more and test again. After four presses you are back where you started. The pin has no other function on the Original monitor.

13. Install the app and add the door

Adding the hub to the Locksure app and joining it to Wi-Fi.

First add the door on the hub: touch and hold the hub’s screen until its setup menu appears, choose DOORS, then ADD NEW DOOR, and turn the lock while the hub shows DOOR SEARCH. Then download the Locksure app (App Store or Google Play), create an account, and follow Hub setup and Wi-Fi to pair the hub and join it to your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Then set up the app, rename the door and choose notifications.
